Abstract
The recovery of patients following extensive injury depends on a compex physiologic response
involving not only the healing of the primary wound but also the compensatory changes of unin
jured organs which must modify their function to sustain the body during the period of repair.
In man the lung may be the single organ most vulnerable to irreversible damage associated with
trauma. The terminal pathways of pulmonary injury following extensive trauma is a peculiar, and
highly lethal form of respiratory failure. We have recently experienced two clinical cases of acute
pulmonary insufficiency secondary to extensive traumatic shock. Our intention of this report is to
inform and stress on a new disease entity of pulmonary insufficiency following a traumatic shock.
